Professor White is recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship and has also held Guggenheim and Rockefeller Fellowships in recognition of his outstanding research. He is the author of several books, including The Organic Machine, the highly acclaimed study of the Columbia River, The Middle Ground: Indians, Empires and Republics in the Great Lakes Region, 1650-1815, and It's Your Misfortune and None of My Own: A New History of the American West. His latest book, Remembering Ahanagran revolves around stories told him by his mother of her girlhood in Ireland, her emigration to the United States, and her life in Chicago.
